Each professional staff member will be on either one of the selection or one of the training committees.  The DOA Committee is comprised of a number of staff from across the department.  Each of the five major committees will be chaired by an Area Coordinator, Assistant Director, or Associate Director.

The other Residence Life Committees are as follows:  Marketing, Recognition, Assessment, and Programming Model.  The Programming Model will be a two-year working group charged with evaluating the current programming model and initiating any needed changes to reflect changes in our staffing, priorities, funding, and student populations.

 Committee Make-Up

Professional Staff Selection- Associate Director (chair) and three professional staff (HDs)

Professional Staff Training- Area Coordinator (chair) and three professional staff (HDs)

Diversity, Outreach, and Advocacy- Area Coordinator (chair) and three professional staff (HDs)

RA Selection, Assistant Director (chair) and three professional staff (HDs)

RA Training, Area Coordinator (chair) and three professional staff (HDs)

Recognition, Hall Director (chair) and two professional staff (HDs)

Assessment, Director (chair), Associate Director, and two professional staff (HDs)

Programming Model Working Group, Assistant Director (chair) and three professional staff (HDs)

We certainly encourage student participation in these committees and/or working through RA Council for RA input and feedback.  Other professional staff members are welcome to serve on additional committees; however, please keep in mind that your first priority is to your building followed by your main committee responsibilities.  Each committee will be asking for other members of the professional staff to help their committee throughout the year (i.e. submit an article for the newsletter, participate in selection).

Hall Directors, particularly returning Hall Directors, will have the opportunity to chair Marketing or Recognition.  Additionally, Hall Directors, particularly returning Hall Directors, will have the opportunity to advise NRHH, co-advise InterHall, advise ROCC/Tunnel, advise Sustainability (formerly known as Project Hilltop), and advise RA Council.

Area meetings will involve not only time to discuss your particular area, but also time dedicated to creating and implementing a X-year experience.  The AC for the FYE area will oversee the FY experience.  Staff from this area will be charged to liaison with the First-Year Working Group.  The AC for the MKR area will oversee the Sophomore experience.  Staff from this area will be charged to liaison with the Sophomore Experience Working Group.  The AC for the apartment areas and upperclass areas Copley and VCE, will oversee the Junior and Senior Year experience.  Staff from this area will be charged to liaison with Alumni Relations.

Hall Directors and Area Coordinators who have Living and Learning Communities in their buildings will be responsible for serving as a co-chair for a steering committee for the community.  This will give the Senior Staff member additional experience and responsibility for the outcomes of these programs.  The Senior Staff member will be responsible for coordinating room assignments, facilitating programming, outreaching to faculty and other departments, and working with students.  There will still be a wider University committee on LLC, but the scope of the group will shift from assignments to vision, sustainability, new communities, marketing, and outreach.

Area Coordinators will take on theses additional responsibilities.

FYE AC- Co-advising InterHall

MKR AC- Supervising the Alumni Lounge

Apt./ UC AC- Overseeing Party Host training and attending ALL meetings

Assistant Director of Residence Life will be taking on additional responsibilities- more than likely a transition to the Living and Learning Communities.

 Outside Residence Life

Rather than focus solely on committees outside of the department, we are taking a broader view of developing connections with other departments.  The role will be in terms of a liaison as opposed to strictly a committee member.  While that means that you may still participate in a particular committee, the direction is more of a broader picture of a liaison and provides good professional development opportunities in the areas of networking.  While this is not an exhaustive list and while you may not be able to do everything on this list, we give you this list as a guide for this role.  Talk with your supervisor and the rest of the Senior Staff to see how your particular liaison role will work best for the department.

  • Attend a staff meeting (if OK with the Director) once or twice a month
  • Attend relevant “other” meeting as needed (i.e. working group)
  • Serve as an advisor with other offices on Residence Life expertise (i.e. selecting RAs for summer programs)
  • Serve as a consultant when Residence Life background helpful (i.e. selecting RAs for the summer)
  • Attend events as your schedule permits, but do not serve as the only presence for the event- there should be someone from the home department as the actual advisor or coordinator for the event (you can commit your time, but check in before committing Residence Life staffing or funding)
  • Represent the Residence Life Office
  • Report back to Senior Staff on a regular basis regarding current programs, concepts, ideas, and issues
  • Apply the ability to say no when asked about Residence Life staff or you yourself to serve in another capacity that you are not comfortable doing or that is not integral with our mission
