Qualifications
The Resident Assistant is
a full-time Georgetown University student who is either
a sophomore, junior or senior. A Resident Assistant must
be in good academic standing, defined as a minimum 2.5
cumulative GPA, from the time of appointment through the
end of the assistantship. Failure to remain in good
standing may result in termination. Second semester
seniors who are part-time students are the only
exception to the full-time status requirement.
The Resident Assistant
is a representative of the Office of Residence Life and
Division of Student Affairs. He/she is expected to
conduct her or himself in a manner consistent with
University rules and regulations as well as departmental
expectations.
Conditions of
Agreement
1. This appointment
runs from mid-August through the day after May
graduation. The final dates will be specified in the
appointment letter. Resident Assistants are required to
attend all training sessions; not being available for
the entirety of training may result in a Resident
Assistant's being required to resign from the position.
2. Remuneration
includes room, a Block 75 meal plan and $700 of Debit
Dollars each semester, Hoyanet phone line, and
voicemail. Resident Assistants are required to be on a
meal plan.
3. A Resident Assistant
is supervised by the Hall Director and is required to
carry out the responsibilities in the job description,
as well as those in the annual appointment letter.
4. A Resident Assistant
must limit outside activities in order to devote ample
time to the position. A Resident Assistant must consult
with his/her Hall Director before assuming an additional
job or assuming other major commitments. The Resident
Assistant positions takes second priority just after
academic commitments during the academic year.
5. A Resident Assistant
is required to:
a.
Attend all training sessions.
b.
Participate in staff meetings and programs.
c.
Fulfill administrative responsibilities such as safety and common
area inspections.
d.
Participate in hall opening and hall closing for each semester.
e.
Meet departmental programming requirements.
f.
Host neighborhood meetings at a regular time every two weeks. These
meetings will be co-hosted with the Neighborhood
Council.
g.
Assume emergency coverage duty on a rotating basis throughout the
year and during some vacations such as Thanksgiving,
Easter, and Spring Break.
h.
Participate in an on-going evaluation of job performance.
i.
Attend In-Service Training sessions as required per semester.
j.
Participate in selected New Student Orientation (NSO) events.
k.
Work with Faculty-in-Residence.
l.
Work with Chaplains-in-Residence.
m.
Perform other duties as assigned.
General
Responsibilities
The Resident Assistant
serves as a vital function in a variety of ways. Among
these is their role as a resource person, advisor,
administrator, and representative of the Residence Life
staff. Their success depends upon both commitment and
attitude. The RA is available to all residents in the
hall area, yet devotes particular attention to the
students of his/her floor or to an individual unit. They
actively promote both floor and inter-floor unity. As a
localized extension of the Residence Life staff, they
must be especially sensitive to residential concerns.
They provide a valuable service to new students by
orienting them to the University and providing
assistance in adjusting to college life throughout the
year.
Specific
Responsibilities
1. Student Advisement
a.
Gets to know each floor resident.
b.
Develops a good rapport with the residents.
c.
Serves as a resource and referral person.
d.
Advises and counsels students in personal, academic, and social
matters within the limits of training and ability by:

Being a receptive and responsive listener

Being available and approachable
o
Knowing personal limitations and where to find assistance
o
Seeking out referrals when necessary
o
Adhering to confidentiality where appropriate
o
Being knowledgeable of available resources
2. Community
Development
a.
Identifies and brings together groups of students.
b.
Facilitates the establishment of mutual expectations, respect and
consideration among students and student groups.
c.
Encourages recognition of individuals and individual achievements.
d.
Aids students in resolving interpersonal and group conflicts.
e.
Encourages student participation in student activities and
intramurals.
f.
Supports and advises Neighborhood Council.
g.
Generates activities of interest to floor members.
h.
Promotes individual responsibility towards other residents and
floor/hall facilities.
i.
Utilizes University and community resources in planning programs.
j.
Reports maintenance and housekeeping concerns affecting individuals
in the community.
3. Documentation of

a.
Maintains hall environment conducive to academic and personal
growth.

Aids students in achieving self-discipline and self-direction.

Knows, understands and enforces rules and regulations.

Knows, understands and uses the adjudication process.

Reports rule infractions to the Hall Director in a timely manner.
4. Education
a.
Requires a knowledge of University departments, organizations,
services and procedures, and uses this knowledge
effectively.

Maintains a current bulletin board.

Conducts informational floor meetings
5. Staff Involvement
a.
Participates actively on RA staff.
b.
Communicates and cooperates with RAs and Senior Staff members.
6. Administrative
Duties
a.
Assists in the opening and closing of the residence hall each
semester.
b.
Maintains accurate floor records.
c.
Performs regularly scheduled inspections.
d.
Performs general tasks as the need arises.
7. Emergencies
a.
Handles emergencies within the limits of training and ability.
b.
Rotates emergency duty with other staff.
