Individual Interview

Each candidate must sign up for an individual interview.  These interviews last approximately one hour.  These are usually conducted by a team of three: one professional Residence Life staff member, one Residence Life Student Staff member, and one partner office representative (i.e. academic dean, CIRs, etc).

The purpose of the individual interview is to determine your general suitability for the Resident Assistant position, ascertain your knowledge of the job, and discuss your ideas and insights into your ability to build and foster a community.  A group composed of Residence Hall Staff members and other university community members will conduct each interview.  The interviewers are interested in your qualifications for the position, basic knowledge of the job requirements, and personal qualities.  Before you interview, you may wish to think about:

1.       Past job experiences, activities, campus involvement.

 2.       Current academic commitments and lifestyle.

 3.       Perception, knowledge about the position.

 4.       Ability to relate to a diverse group of students.

 5.       Specific qualifications, limitations.

 6.       Possible situations you might encounter as an RA or AM.

 7.       Ideas on community building.

 8.       Strengths and challenges you would bring.

 9.       Abilities and insights around teamwork.

 10.    Your expectations for yourself in the position.

Please also remember that the individual interview is a chance for you to ask questions about the job for which you're applying, the Office of Residence Life in general, and any other questions you may have for our professional and/or student staff.

This year, the Office of Residence Life is asking candidates for Student Staff positions to bring an example of a creative expression to their individual interview.  This is designed to help us get to know you and how you would approach programming with your residents.  Your creation will not be judged on artistic merit but on how creatively you approached the project and how thoughtfully you considered the needs and interests of your potential residents.

The creation should be one of the following, designed to address the programming value of a Diverse Community.  All of these should be on one sheet of 8.5 x 11 paper only.  Other sizes or multiple pages will not be accepted.

  •  A sketch/layout of a bulletin board you would create.

  • A drawing of or production of some other passive program.

  • An advertisement for an active program.

Your creative expression may include information and images from other sources, but the creation, design, and concept should be entirely your own.

We encourage you to have fun with this and show us your inventive side.  Again, please bring your creative expression to your individual interview.

Group Process

The group process if offered on one day only, so please mark your calendars quickly.  Spring 2008 Study Abroad Group Process is on November 30 and Regular applicant group process is on February 1.   Conducted in two, two-hour sessions, the group process places you in interactions with approximately 5-10 other applicants.  These processes are not traditional interview-style, but are rather a chance for our staff to observe your group skills, leadership, and problem-solving interactions.

Placement Preferences

During the process, we will ask you for your preferences about where you would like to be placed if you are hired.  We cannot guarantee that accepted applicants will receive a placement they preferred.  Applicants who have a medical need for a particular placement should note that on their application and have the appropriate paperwork on file with the Office of Housing Services.
